About Us

When you buy something off us or use our interior design service you are working with real people, Ruth and Peter. You are inviting us into your homes and work places. So we thought you might like to know something about us.

The products we sell and the brands we represent all have certain things in common:

Excellent Design – We only choose products which represent great design, that we would be happy to have on our home/workplace. In fact we discovered some of these products when looking for beautiful things for ourselves.

Quality Materials & Workmanship – All our manufacturers use top quality materials. Many products are still hand made by artisans with an intense pride in their work, for example our Prandina glass lights are mouth blown and the larger ones require 3 men to manage the large piece of glass. These high quality products last longer and therefore are kinder to the environment.

Locally Sourced & Eco Friendly – All our products are made in UK or Europe, and so travel fewer miles to the end consumer. For example our Hitch Mylius sofas are hand made (no machines) in a factory in North London and their packaging is recyclable.  All our suppliers are very conscious of their environmental impact, e.g. Boss Design are a carbon neutral company. Allermuir offer a re-cycling service for old furniture.

Fairly Traded – Since all our products are made in UK or Europe you can be assured that those who make them are paid a fair wage and are treated fairly.

Outstanding Service – Finally and very importantly we offer outstanding service to our customers, both before and after your purchase. We will go out of our way to help you choose the right product for you and we will make sure the whole process runs smoothly once your order is placed.

Here are some comments we have got from our customers

"It was a pleasure to purchase from you; I would definitely recommend Canning & Sheridan to a friend.  Your accomodation with the provision of the extra halogen bulbs is greatly appreciated. " DP USA

"Thanks yet again - outstanding service!"  A.J.

"The best and most efficient furniture company I have used." V.K.

"You must be the most helpful and fast working person on the internet! Thank you so much."  A.C.B.

"Many thanks for your great service." D.T.

As a child I dreamed of being an artist. I had two hobbies drawing and re-arranging my bedroom furniture regularly (much to the irritation of my long suffering parents).

After school, I was told to get a proper job as being an artist was no way to earn a living. So off I went to train as a nurse before moving on to a degree in Science at University College Dublin.

All that science was interesting of course. It imposed a certain discipline and logic on my ‘artistic’ temperament. But the truth will out.

After years working for blue chip companies in gray soulless offices, I retrained as an interior designer at Chelsea College of Art & Design.

That's when I really started doing what I always wanted, making spaces look and feel wonderful, so the people who inhabit them are very happy.

Well the first thing you need to know about me is that as soon as a camera appears, my face takes on a life of its own. So photographs are not my strongest point. This one was taken on holidays and I wasn't aware that my picture was being taken.

I met Ruth while studying the same science degree, but unlike her I loved the discipline and the logic. Project Management became my occupation of choice. I get enormous satisfaction from managing anything from inception all the way through to completion. For many years this was in Investment Banking until Ruth and I set up this business together.

Now instead of managing big IT and business projects I manage our own projects - from simple furniture delivery & installations through to full scale property refurbishments.

Three things you might not have guessed about me are a great interest in history, I'm a fully qualified poker dealer and regularly deal in Tournaments around the country, and finally I can't dance.

I am a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Corporate Entertainments Officer at Canning & Sheridan Interiors.

As you can see here I frequently spend my days keeping an eye on things. My favourite pastimes include watching television, stealing toilet rolls, hanging out of car windows and stealing socks.

Being a favourite of King Charles II, a portrait of one of my ancestors hangs in the National Portrait Gallery

Like all great corporations we though we should have a mission statement, but we couldn't agree on one. So we ended up with 21 instead. We hope you like at least one of them.
  1. Think independently - develop your own style and don’t worry about what others think.

  2. We need beauty in our lives. This doesn't mean the triumph of style over substance. We don't believe you can have true style without substance.

  3. Take inspiration from as many sources as possible; art, fashion, cinema, theatre, nature...

  4. Be eclectic. Mix it up and enjoy the result. Vintage, high street and classic investment pieces can and should be mixed.

  5. Forget about labels. If you took the label off what would you think.

  6. Break the rules – especially if it makes you happy.

  7. Our surroundings have a profound impact on how we feel. Improve your home and mood in one go.

  8. Size is NOT important - whatever size your budget or your space, style is always possible.

  9. Size IS important - putting one large item in a room can be very effective.

  10. Colour is good for the soul. "The craving for colour is a natural necessity just as for water and fire. Colour is a raw material indispensable to life", painter Fernand Leger.

  11. Never underestimate the power of orange. It's flamboyant and fun, creates energy and encourages socialisation.

  12. Think like a child – they have no preconceptions about what ‘goes’.

  13. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

  14. Don’t take design too seriously – no one will die.

  15. Think about where, how and by whom products are being made. We believe in supporting products made by hand, by well treated employees and that have not traveled too far to the end consumer.

  16. If your mother likes it you probably shouldn't buy it.

  17. Coffee and (dark) chocolate are really good for you – it’s science.

  18. Cake is not good for you but eat it anyway.

  19. Dogs and cats make great foot warmers.

  20. Designers should not wear black while exhorting everyone to wear their own colourful creations. Walk the Talk!

  21. If you don’t feel absolutely fabulous when you enter your home or workplace get help now!
